Cherie Carson, UpSwing Company Director, dancer, choreographer, yoga teacher & aerialist has choreographed performances in planetariums, swimming pools and sculpture gardens and on stilts, roller blades, ropes, trapeze and bungee cords since 1987. Aerial Dance Director, Ms. Carson, teaches classes for kids and adults. She has choreographed widely, including Moving in the Spirit Dance, an inner city youth dance company in Atlanta. Ms. Carson has taught aerial dance for Monkey Business Camp and served as guest aerial choreographer for San Francisco University High School production of Olanthe. As a principal teaching artist for five years at Center for Creative Education in Florida, she taught movement and yoga to both students and classroom teachers. Cherie’s first performance of aerial dance was in 1990 in Joanna Haigood’s “Sleep” set on Several Dancers Core in Atlanta, GA. She has been pursuing aerial dance ever since. In 2000, Cherie moved to the Bay Area and began her studies with Terry Sendgraff, pioneer in aerial dance & the creator of Motivity, the low flying trapeze aerial dance form. In 2005, Terry retired and Cherie took over her aerial business thus creating STUDIO 12 flys. In 2011, Cherie introduced her new company UpSwing Dance Company.

Hannah Dworkin, Director of Youth Programs, is a skilled performing artist and educator with a strong background in modern and aerial dance and opera. She is a fully credentialed classroom and music teacher, and she holds a Masters Degree in Music and Music Education from Columbia University. Hannah is Aerial Camp Director and teaches Kids Who Fly, Girls Who Fly and the Aerial Family Jams with UpSwing and may be reached at

Ashley Foster became addicted to aerial dance through classes with Terry Sendgraff and eventually began performing as a part of 'Terry Sendgraff's Aerial Dancer's' and the Technomania Circus. Ashley continued developing her aerial dance and performance skills after Terry's retirement with Cherie Carson and as a solo artist and has been teaching aerial dance at STUDIO 12 for 3 years now. Suzanne Gallo (Adjunct Faculty) has danced with The San Francisco Opera Ballet, Lines, ODC, and Project Bandaloop, and has performed with many local choreographers. She is known and admired for her quality and interpretation of movement on the ground, on the sides of buildings and cliffs, and in the air. Suzanne has given workshops in dance technique while in residency at Middlebury, Swathmore and Dartmouth Colleges, and has been faculty member and performer with San Francisco’s Zaccho Dance Theater, under the direction of Joanna Haigood. Kimberly Adams, (Adjunct Faculty) Aerial Dancer and Teacher,has been studying movement arts for 15 years including yoga, martial arts and dance. She earned a B.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in Theater Arts from Sonoma State University home of Modern Dance, Contact Improv, Ballet and Theater. She studied under and worked on projects with Anne Bluethanthal and Dancers, Scott Wells and several small performing companies through out the Bay Area. She began studying aerial dance during her college years and after a few years off she continued on studying circus arts, specializing in aerial tissu. She runs 7th Heaven Yoga in Berkeley California.
Phil Weglarz (Adjunct Faculty) has been faculty at Studio 12 since 2006 and helped develop the first aerial dance "Family Jam" and programs for younger children. Prior to teaching, Phil studied Motivity Aerial Dance with Terry Sendgraff and trained in both static and flying trapeze at Circus Center in San Francisco. Currently, Phil Weglarz is a full-time expressive art therapist and licensed psychotherapist who believes that play is essential to health and well-being. He created "Active Imagination" interactive arts programs, which offer engaging, structured creative outlets for people of any age to explore various common themes. Phil has experience offering arts-based therapies and social services for children, adults, couples, and families in a variety of settings, including medical hospitals, welfare agencies, residential and day treatment programs, and privately. Rima Miller (Adjunct faculty) is a very creative artist who lives in New Mexico. She comes to the Bay Area once or twice a year and teaches Inversion Swings. We are very happy to host her and promote her work.
 STUDIO 12 "Best Way to Learn How to Fly" by the SF Weekly's 'Best of 2006 UpSwing Aerial Dance is an aerial dance program specializing in low flying trapeze, sling, and rope and harness work. The studio is located at 2525 8th St. in Berkeley near the corner of Dwight and 8th.
